According to Chinese legend, T'ai Chi began in the 12th century, when Chang
San Feng watched a bird swoop down to capture a snake. The snake was able
to avoid the bird's beak by constantly shifting from side to side. Chang San
Feng understood how softness could overcome hardness, and how shifting opposite
forces (yin and yang) could have practical applications in the martial arts.
T'ai Chi is a system of physical exercise originating in China. It is based on
the principles of effortless breathing, rhythmic movement and weight equilibrium.
The essence of T'ai Chi is the maintenance of perfect body balance at all times.
It consists of fluid and graceful circular movements that are relaxed and slow
in tempo. The breathing is slowed and deepened. This relaxes the body and allows
the Chi (the life force or life energy) to flow unimpeded through the body.
